The MAK 8CM32C Diesel Generator set installed at a Gold Mine in Burkina Faso met with an accident, damaging the crankshaft. This generator plays a critical role in supplying power to the gold mine.

Action taken by RA Power Solutions to repair the crankshaft of MAK 8CM32C :

RA Power Solutions deputed two technicians with an onsite crankshaft grinding machine, instruments, and necessary consumables.

Upon arrival, they inspected the crankshaft of a damaged diesel generating set of MAK 8CM32C.

The details of the job are as follows:

The dimensional inspection of the damaged and seized crankpin number #7 was conducted.

• Dimensional checks revealed:

Minimum Diameter: 279.68 mm

Maximum Diameter: 280.00 mm

Ovality: 0.32 mm

Apart from an ovality of 0.32 mm, the crankpin exhibited deep scoring marks and a rough surface, which was developed due to seizure of the bearing.

• The hardness was checked and showed marginally higher values in certain spots.
• MPI for crack detection was undertaken and revealed no cracks or abnormalities.
• The remaining crankpins were also inspected for taper and ovality and all within acceptable limits.

Action taken for the successful repair of the crankshaft of MAK 8CM32C :

i) The grinding of crankpin number #7 was ground to an undersize of 3 mm; this was done as the deep line marks were present at every step.
They got cleared only after grinding the crankpin to 3 mm undersize, resulting in a final diameter of 277.00 mm.

ii) The remaining crankpins were polished to improve surface finish and reduce the ovality by 0.01/0.02 mm.

Design of Crankshaft grinding machine

i) The crankpin and main journal repair machine is designed to be carried to any site all over the world. It is light in weight.

iii) The design and construction of the machine is done in a way that it creates minimum vibration. The crankshaft can be repaired even while sailing of the vessel. 

iv) In general taper & ovality after grinding of crankpin & main journal can be controlled within 0.02 mm.

RA Power Solutions was approached by a leading Cement manufacturing Plant based in Nepal regarding failure of their Crankshaft of Wartsila Diesel Generator model no. WARTSILA  VASA 12V32 LN.

A team of RA Power Solutions technicians were deputed to Nepal.Engine details are also given below:

Wartsila Diesel Generator Observations: 

 i) On inspection of all the crankpins visually the Bearing of crankpin no. 3 was observed damaged and bearing material was found in the oil sump. 
 ii) The Bearing was removed from the crankpin and on visual inspection it was observed that bearing material was embedded on the crankpin. The radius fillet of both sides of the crankpin was found damaged.
iii) The crankpin was subject to the dimensional inspection and following dimensions were observed. 
a) Minimum diameter observed-   269.52 mm
b) Maximum diameter observed-   270.00 mm
Action taken for successful repair of Wartsila Diesel generator 
i) The onsite grinding of crankpin no. 3 was started by the portable onsite crankshaft grinding machine.
 ii) The ovality of 0.48 mm which was observed initially at the time of inspection of the crankshaft was removed by undersizing the crankpin diameter to 269.00 (1.0 mm undersize).
iii) The crank pin diameter was reduced to 268.50 mm (1.5mm undersize) and the crankpin was inspected. Due to the presence of line marks it was again decided to further grind the crankpin to the undersize of 2.0 mm.
iv) The crank pin was finally ground to the size of 268 mm (2.0 mm undersize) and following dimensions & tolerance were maintained:
a) Minimum diameter observed after grinding/ polishing-    267.98 mm 
b) Maximum diameter observed after grinding/ polishing-   268.00 mm
v) The surface finish after grinding & polishing was checked by mitutoyo surface test equipment and was again observed in the range 0.10 RA Value.

Successful Repair of Wartsila Engine 12V32 LN
The successful repair of damaged crank pin no. 3 of Wartsila Crankshaft 12V32 in a short time of 79 hrs is an achievement, the grinding of crankpin was undertaken non stop on 24 hours basis by a team of technicians of RA Power Solutions.

 

 

MAN Engine Model no. 5L 16/24 is a very common installation on vessels and the engine is used as Generator. The Crank Pin diameter of MAN Engine Model no. 5L 16/24 is only 130mm and the bearing width is 56 mm. In other words it is about 2 inches

We have recently successfully executed the repair of the crankshaft of MAN Engine Model no. 5L 16/24. Details are as mentioned below:

 
Details of Crankshaft repair job executed by RA Power Solutions technicians at port of Castellon Spain.

 i) The damaged crankpin was checked for taper & ovality and it was observed 0.49 mm.  

 ii) Deep bearing line marks were observed. 

 iii) All other parameters like hardness, crack detection  by MPI were checked and no abnormality was found. 

 iv)  The crankpin was ground to an undersize of 1.0mm. 

 
Supply of Undersize Bearing for MAN Engine Model no. 5L 16/24

It is obvious that whenever grinding is undertaken there  is requirement of undersize bearing. In this case of MAN Engine Model no. 5L 16/24  RA Power Solutions arranged and supplied 1.0mm undersize crankpin bearing to the client.

We maintain a large stock of standard & undersize bearings of crankpin & main journal of popular make & model of engines like Yanmar, Daihatsu, MAK and MAN B&W etc. 

 The Engine was commissioned in presence of our technicians and performance was found to be satisfactory. 

 

We were approached by a leading shipping company operating heavy container vessels for the problem faced by them due to the failure of the Crankshaft of Wartsila 12V32. The vessel was in the outer anchorage of Jebel Ali Port Dubai.

The Wartsila Engine details are as follows.

Action taken by RA Power Solutions to Repair Crankshaft of Wartsila 12V32

 
i) RA Power Solutions deputed two technicians to Dubai with a portable crankshaft grinding machine and instruments to inspect and execute the repair of Wartsila Crankshaft 12V32.

ii) On inspection the crankpin no. 6 having a standard diameter of 270 mm was found to be seriously damaged. 

iii) Due to the seizure of the bearing the radius fillet of both the ends was damaged. 

 
iv) The crankpin was dimensionally checked and the size observed is as following:

   a) Minimum diameter observed :    268.45 mm

    b) Maximum diameter observed:    269.79 mm

    c) The hardness of the crankpin was taken and observed between 270 and 560 on HB scale which is considered to be on higher side as per the Wartsila engine manual.

v) The cracks were checked by MPI using high intensity Megnaflux torch. multiple hairline cracks were observed on damaged crankpin.

Action taken by RA Power Solutions to successfully repair of crankshaft of Wartsila 12V32

 

 i) The above dimensional and inspection reports showed that the crankpin is seriously damaged as the radius fillet profile was also  lost due to the accident.

 ii) The main challenge was that the vessel sailing schedule was fixed for Galle Sri Lanka and the repair of the crank pin was to be executed while sailing of the vessel from Jebel Ali Port Dubai to Galle Port Sri Lanka.

iii) The surface finish was checked by the latest mitutoyo roughness tester and it was observed within the RA value of 0.12 and 0.10 which is far superior to the original surface finish recommended by wartsila as a manufacturer of engines.

Bergen Rolls Royce Crankshaft repair / Rolls Royce Engine Crankshaft Grinding / RA Power Solutions

 

RA Power Solutions was approached by one of our old client to undertake repair of Bergen Rolls Royce Engine Model no. B32:40 L8P crankshaft. 

The Bergen Rolls Royce engine and crankshaft have following major specifications:

 

 

 

Inspection of  Rolls Royce Engine Crankshaft undertaken by RA Power Solutions technicians  

 

RA Power Solutions technicians boarded the vessel at JNPT Port, Mumbai India and undertook the inspection of the crankshaft.

 

Following was the main observation:

 

i) On visual inspection it was observed that crankpin bearing of CR no. 3  was damaged and bearing material was found in the sump.

 

ii) On removal of the connecting rod  it was observed the connecting rod bearing was badly struck on the crankpin and even the bearing material was embedded in crankpin diameter. 

 

iii) After removal of bearing material from crankpin circumference the inspection of crankpin was undertaken. 

 

iv)The crankpin dimension was observed as follows:

 a) Minimum diameter observed 269.43 mm.

 b) Maximum diameter observed 269.89 mm.

 

v) The hardness was checked and was observed within the limit.  

 

vi) The crack detection of Rolls Royce Engine crank pin was conducted by MPI method and no crack or abnormality was observed.

 

vii) On visual inspection of crank pin deep bearing line marks were observed. 

 

Action taken by RA Power Solutions to repair the crankshaft of Bergen Rolls Royce Engine.

 

i) The Grinding of crankpin no. 3 was undertaken to the step size of 1 mm. The final size after grinding was maintained as 269.00 mm. 

 

ii) After final grinding/ Polishing of crankpin all the parameters like taper, ovality, hardness, crack detection and surface test were undertaken and report on our standard format was prepared.

We recently completed a successful onsite repair of a BERGEN B32:40L8P engine crankshaft onboard a vessel in Jamaica.

• Two of our experienced technicians, along with our portable onsite crankshaft grinding equipment, traveled from New Delhi, India, to Jamaica.
• Our equipment is lightweight, compact, and portable, allowing it to be transported as accompanied baggage, which eliminates delays associated with cargo shipment and customs clearance.
• Upon boarding, the vessel was found fully loaded with containers, yet our team immediately initiated the crankshaft inspection.
• It was observed that Crankpin No. 5 had suffered severe damage due to a bearing failure.
• The crankpin was thoroughly cleaned, and embedded bearing material was carefully removed.
• Dimensional checks revealed:
  • Minimum Diameter: 269.75 mm
  • Maximum Diameter: 270.00 mm
  • Ovality: 0.25 mm
  • Deep scoring marks were also noted due to the bearing failure.
• A Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) using a high-intensity Magnaflux torch was conducted to check for cracks. No cracks or abnormalities were detected.
• Hardness testing was performed, and confirmed that values remained within permissible limits.

• The crankpin was calibrated and ground in multiple stages, with ovality strictly controlled during the process.

We recently completed a successful onsite repair of a BERGEN B32:40L8P engine crankshaft onboard a vessel in Jamaica.

• Two of our experienced technicians, along with our portable onsite crankshaft grinding equipment, traveled from New Delhi, India, to Jamaica.
• Our equipment is lightweight, compact, and portable, allowing it to be transported as accompanied baggage, which eliminates delays associated with cargo shipment and customs clearance.
• Upon boarding, the vessel was found fully loaded with containers, yet our team immediately initiated the crankshaft inspection.
• It was observed that Crankpin No. 5 had suffered severe damage due to a bearing failure.
• The crankpin was thoroughly cleaned, and embedded bearing material was carefully removed.

• The crankpin was calibrated and ground in multiple stages, with ovality strictly controlled during the process.
• Due to deep scoring, the crankpin had to be ground to an undersize of 2 mm.
• The final dimension achieved was 268.00 mm – 0.02 mm, ensuring precision and compliance with engine requirements.

Engine Commissioning

• The vessel had a 2 mm undersize bearing in stock, which was installed immediately after grinding.
• A trial run of the engine was conducted in the presence of our technicians, and performance was found to be fully satisfactory.

RA Power Solutions was intimated by a shipping company based in Dubai regarding problem faced by them in the crankshaft of MAN B&W 5L16/24. Our two technicians with onsite crankshaft grinding machine and necessary measuring instruments were sent on board the vessel at Kandla Port, India.

Inspection and Repair Procedure of Crankshaft of MAN B&W Engine 5L16/24

 

i) The complete inspection of crankshaft, as per the protocol was done, which includes dimensional inspection for taper & ovality, hardness test, MPI for crack detection and visual inspection.All other parameters were observed within limits, except excessive ovality was observed in case of all crankpins in the range of 0.10 MM to 0.40 MM.This is considered to be very much on the higher side, as the tolerance for the crankpin diameter 130.00 MM is only 0.03 MM, as per the manual. ii) The ovality report in brief of crankpin is pasted below

 

 

iii) All the crankpins were ground according to the extent of ovality.iv) The bearings of undersize was supplied by RA Power Solutions.v) The Engine was commissioning in presence of our technicians and performance was found satisfactory.
