Wartsila Diesel Generator Observations:
i) On inspection of all the crankpins visually the Bearing of crankpin no. 3 was observed damaged and bearing material was found in the oil sump.
ii) The Bearing was removed from the crankpin and on visual inspection it was observed that bearing material was embedded on the crankpin. The radius fillet of both sides of the crankpin was found damaged.
iii) The crankpin was subject to the dimensional inspection and following dimensions were observed.
a) Minimum diameter observed- 269.52 mm
b) Maximum diameter observed- 270.00 mm
Action taken for successful repair of Wartsila Diesel generator
i) The onsite grinding of crankpin no. 3 was started by the portable onsite crankshaft grinding machine.
ii) The ovality of 0.48 mm which was observed initially at the time of inspection of the crankshaft was removed by undersizing the crankpin diameter to 269.00 (1.0 mm undersize).
iii) The crank pin diameter was reduced to 268.50 mm (1.5mm undersize) and the crankpin was inspected. Due to the presence of line marks it was again decided to further grind the crankpin to the undersize of 2.0 mm.
iv) The crank pin was finally ground to the size of 268 mm (2.0 mm undersize) and following dimensions & tolerance were maintained:
a) Minimum diameter observed after grinding/ polishing- 267.98 mm
b) Maximum diameter observed after grinding/ polishing- 268.00 mm
v) The surface finish after grinding & polishing was checked by mitutoyo surface test equipment and was again observed in the range 0.10 RA Value.
Successful Repair of Wartsila Engine 12V32 LN
The successful repair of damaged crank pin no. 3 of Wartsila Crankshaft 12V32 in a short time of 79 hrs is an achievement, the grinding of crankpin was undertaken non stop on 24 hours basis by a team of technicians of RA Power Solutions.
MAN Engine Model no. 5L 16/24 is a very common installation on vessels and the engine is used as Generator. The Crank Pin diameter of MAN Engine Model no. 5L 16/24 is only 130mm and the bearing width is 56 mm. In other words it is about 2 inches

i) The damaged crankpin was checked for taper & ovality and it was observed 0.49 mm.
ii) Deep bearing line marks were observed.
iii) All other parameters like hardness, crack detection by MPI were checked and no abnormality was found.
iv) The crankpin was ground to an undersize of 1.0mm.
Supply of Undersize Bearing for MAN Engine Model no. 5L 16/24
It is obvious that whenever grinding is undertaken there is requirement of undersize bearing. In this case of MAN Engine Model no. 5L 16/24 RA Power Solutions arranged and supplied 1.0mm undersize crankpin bearing to the client.

We were approached by a leading shipping company operating heavy container vessels for the problem faced by them due to the failure of the Crankshaft of Wartsila 12V32. The vessel was in the outer anchorage of Jebel Ali Port Dubai.

Action taken by RA Power Solutions to Repair Crankshaft of Wartsila 12V32
i) RA Power Solutions deputed two technicians to Dubai with a portable crankshaft grinding machine and instruments to inspect and execute the repair of Wartsila Crankshaft 12V32.
ii) On inspection the crankpin no. 6 having a standard diameter of 270 mm was found to be seriously damaged.
iii) Due to the seizure of the bearing the radius fillet of both the ends was damaged.
iv) The crankpin was dimensionally checked and the size observed is as following:
a) Minimum diameter observed : 268.45 mm
b) Maximum diameter observed: 269.79 mm
c) The hardness of the crankpin was taken and observed between 270 and 560 on HB scale which is considered to be on higher side as per the Wartsila engine manual.
v) The cracks were checked by MPI using high intensity Megnaflux torch. multiple hairline cracks were observed on damaged crankpin.
Action taken by RA Power Solutions to successfully repair of crankshaft of Wartsila 12V32
i) The above dimensional and inspection reports showed that the crankpin is seriously damaged as the radius fillet profile was also lost due to the accident.
ii) The main challenge was that the vessel sailing schedule was fixed for Galle Sri Lanka and the repair of the crank pin was to be executed while sailing of the vessel from Jebel Ali Port Dubai to Galle Port Sri Lanka.
iii) The surface finish was checked by the latest mitutoyo roughness tester and it was observed within the RA value of 0.12 and 0.10 which is far superior to the original surface finish recommended by wartsila as a manufacturer of engines.

Inspection of Rolls Royce Engine Crankshaft undertaken by RA Power Solutions technicians
RA Power Solutions technicians boarded the vessel at JNPT Port, Mumbai India and undertook the inspection of the crankshaft.
Following was the main observation:
i) On visual inspection it was observed that crankpin bearing of CR no. 3 was damaged and bearing material was found in the sump.
ii) On removal of the connecting rod it was observed the connecting rod bearing was badly struck on the crankpin and even the bearing material was embedded in crankpin diameter.
iii) After removal of bearing material from crankpin circumference the inspection of crankpin was undertaken.
iv)The crankpin dimension was observed as follows:
a) Minimum diameter observed 269.43 mm.
b) Maximum diameter observed 269.89 mm.
v) The hardness was checked and was observed within the limit.
vi) The crack detection of Rolls Royce Engine crank pin was conducted by MPI method and no crack or abnormality was observed.
vii) On visual inspection of crank pin deep bearing line marks were observed.
Action taken by RA Power Solutions to repair the crankshaft of Bergen Rolls Royce Engine.
i) The Grinding of crankpin no. 3 was undertaken to the step size of 1 mm. The final size after grinding was maintained as 269.00 mm.
ii) After final grinding/ Polishing of crankpin all the parameters like taper, ovality, hardness, crack detection and surface test were undertaken and report on our standard format was prepared.
